Priyanka Yoshikawa, who was born to an Indian father and a Japanese mother, has predictably faced severe backlash from a reserved section of Japanese people after she won the Miss Japan title. They opine that Miss Japan should not be 'half' Japanese.
"People are asking me about my 'purity'. Yes, I'm half Indian, my dad is an Indian and I'm proud of it, I'm proud that I have Indian in me. But that does not mean I'm not Japanese," said the beauty pageant winner, who will contest for the Miss World crown as a contestant from Japan this December.
The 22-year-old Priyanka Yoshikawa, who was born and bred in Tokyo, vowed to continue the fight against racial discrimination in Japan. Before Yoshikawa, Ariana Miyamoto also faced similar backlash after she had become the first black woman to win 'Miss Japan' title.
On the other hand, people from India are sending congratulatory messages to Priyanka after she clinched the crown. Priyanka said that she was overwhelmed by the love shown by Indians.
