It's a heavenly time for small and medium budget movies this year. Several content-driven low budget movies are ending up as surprise hits at the box-office both in the Telugu states and in overseas.
Actor turned director Srinivas Avasarala's romantic family entertainer Jyo Achyutananda is the latest film to join this club. Released on Friday last week, this film got favorable reviews from critics and moviegoers too gave it a thumbs up.
While Jyo Achyutananda's collections in the Telugu states are decent in multiplexes and A centres, the film has already become the highest grossing movie in overseas in the careers of both its heroes Nara Rohit and Naga Shaurya.
Until its Sunday run, Jyo Achyutananda has grossed $311K in the US, which is a good total for a medium budget movie. However, Jyo Achyutananda has to pick up its speed considerably this week and even next week to break even as the US distributors have shelled out nearly $750K to acquire the rights.
